There is a meteoric 83 percent rise in the time spent by U.S. people on social-networking sites from a year ago, according to a report released Wednesday by Nielsen Online.
Facebook enjoys the top spot among social networks, with people having spent a total of 13.9 billion minutes on the service in April of this year, 700 percent more than in April 2008, Nielsen said. Minutes spent on Twitter soared a whopping 3,712 percent to almost 300 million, versus around 7.8 million from the same month a year ago.

Teens’ craze over social networking has begun to entice school officials, and Fairfax County is the first Washington-area school system to join the frenzy.
But while students are jumping onto sites like Facebook to post party pictures or opine about the latest addition to reality television, the school district is far more tame.
No photos and no “favorites,” but simply a litany of information that leads parents and community members to the district’s Web site and news releases. And that’s exactly what schools officials want.

President Obama wants his speech to the Islamic world from Cairo Thursday to resonate beyond Egypt, and the United States government is mounting an aggressive social-networking campaign to engage Muslims in conversation about what he says.
From text-messaging set up by the State Department to targeting the 20 million Muslims using Twitter abroad, the White House, recalling the presidential campaign’s potent outreach efforts, also will use Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and a South Asian Web site called Orkut to ensure as many people as possible have access to live streaming, the speech’s text and ongoing discussion of the event.

More professionals are turning to social networks in hopes of ultimately securing jobs, but such sites lack what recruitment agencies can provide, say observers.
Leong, an IT professional in the financial industry told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail, social networks are an effective means of providing opportunities for “casual jobs” such as survey respondents, freelance photographers and part-time work, as well as the much-publicized “The Best Job in the World.”
